Goliath

1 Samuel 17:1-18:30
“The LORD saves, not with sword and spear. For the battle is the LORD’S, and He will give you into our hand.” 1 Samuel 17:47

This morning when I read this I really felt more like Goliath than I’ve ever felt in my entire life; defeated and headless. I’m not exactly sure, but I’m pretty sure I wrestled with Jesus all night last night and I lost. I woke up with such a spirit of defeat I can’t recall ever feeling so conquered. And so to wake up and read about Goliath’s fall, well, it struck me. Sometimes we’re the nine foot giant against the puny little stick of a kid with a sling and a rock and dead-on aim from a dead-on God. And no matter how big we are, we WILL fall because we’re standing toe to toe with God’s anointed.
And boy when we fall, we fall HARD!
And yet, as the day wore on and my feet grew a shoe size from all the standing, it occurred to me that perhaps, just maybe you can be both Goliath AND David simultaneously. You facing you; your brain against your spirit man. Sometimes your brain takes awhile, a very long while, to catch up with what your spirit has known all along. And sometimes while your brain is standing in direct opposition to God, all it takes is one tiny stone – one word from your spirit to get your brain to fall into submission.
We’re not perfect.
We never will be. So there’s no point in beating ourselves up over it.
But if we keep reaching toward perfection, we just might attain excellence.
